One person was injured when they were hit by a truck during a Christmas parade in Raleigh. The incident happened Saturday at about 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on West Grove Street in the Eastside. According to the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, a driver had just missed the Christmas tree being carried by dozens of people when he hit two people in the back. One man suffered a sprained toe and was taken by ambulance to WakeMed. The other was taken to an area hospital where he was treated and released.
“We’re all shocked,” said Raleigh attorney Jason McDaniel, who is representing the injured party. “The incident happened at 6:30 p.m. and it wasn’t even Thanksgiving. It’s really not fair to paint these young adults as something that we’ve never experienced before on this community.”
Mr. McDaniel says the driver had a history of violating traffic laws.
“He was issued seven citations in the past year and every single one of those citations came with a warrant,” said Mr. McDaniel. “He was on probation at the time and he had no respect for the law.”
Mr. McDaniel says that he and his client are not going to file charges against the driver.
“The driver was not at fault, we do not have any charges against that individual,” said Mr. McDaniel.
WakeMed spokesman Brian Burch said one of the partygoers was transported to WakeMed by ambulance. The man was not identified by WakeMed officials.
