Former Trump campaign aide suggests National Guard ‘protecting pro Trump people’ in video obtained by Congress

A video of a group of conservatives that met to discuss what to do next if Republicans failed to pass President Trump’s agenda was obtained by the House Intelligence Committee. In the footage, Michael T. Steele, a former Trump campaign aide, and a prominent member of the House Freedom Caucus, Congressman Mark Meadows of North Carolina, can be seen contemplating the next steps. “I think that we really need to make sure that the National Guard is on the ground and getting ready to protect the pro Trump people in this country,” Steele says in the clip. “I hope they show up on the Mall on Inauguration Day,” he adds.

The incident occurred in September 2017 and was first reported on Monday by CNN. It is included as part of the ongoing congressional investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.

News of the exchange comes just after Donald Trump Jr. described a meeting he attended in June 2016 with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya as one of the “eleven disastrous meetings” his father took during the campaign.
